The long-standing rivalry between Australian radio broadcasters Alan Jones and Ray Hadley reached a new and complex phase this week as both figures became central to a high-profile court case. Jones is currently facing multiple charges, including 20 counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual touching, involving allegations made by six men that date back more than two decades. Jones has denied all allegations and pleaded not guilty.
The conflict between Jones and Hadley has spanned several decades and was marked by a mixture of professional collaboration, rivalry, and frequent public clashes. Hadley, who began his full-time radio career at 2UE in 1983 as a sports presenter, moved to rival station 2GB in 2001. Jones joined 2UE in 1985 and later moved to 2GB in 2002, shortly after Hadley’s arrival at the station. At 2GB, Jones hosted the breakfast show while Hadley followed with the morning program, positioning them as direct competitors within the same network.
Hadley acknowledged that their relationship had been turbulent from the outset, describing years marked by on-air disputes and periods of both hostility and occasional warmth. Former colleagues noted that while Hadley initially benefited from Jones’s influence and momentum, their relationship deteriorated over time, with public eruptions and behind-the-scenes tensions becoming common.
This week in court, Hadley also provided evidence involving a complainant identified as Complainant C, a former Jones employee who alleges Jones engaged in unwanted sexual contact, including kissing and inappropriate touching in the workplace and transport. Complainant C had first come forward publicly in a series of articles published in late 2023 and has since been part of the ongoing legal proceedings.
The feud between Jones and Hadley intensified following revelations in 2018 that Hadley had been offered a secret contract to replace Jones on the breakfast show. Hadley testified that media executive John Singleton was frustrated with Jones’s impact on advertising revenue and political stances, influencing the offer. However, after a media company merger involving 2GB’s parent company, Hadley stepped aside as the new leadership decided Jones would remain in the breakfast slot.
Further complicating their relationship were allegations made against Hadley himself, which arose during the court proceedings but were later dismissed when CCTV evidence cleared him. Hadley testified that Jones had allegedly instructed his team to investigate him, worsening hostilities between them.
Despite their acrimonious professional relationship, Hadley’s role in bringing Complainant C’s allegations to light was significant. Hadley facilitated the introduction of Complainant C to a journalist, leading to the 2023 media reports that eventually resulted in Jones’s charges. The pair continued working together for several months after the allegations first surfaced, although their relationship reportedly deteriorated markedly during the COVID-19 pandemic due to divergent views on public health measures and media presentation.
The courtroom encounters between Jones and Hadley represent a dramatic new chapter in a rivalry that has shaped Australian talk radio for more than three decades, intertwining professional competition with serious legal and personal issues.
