A striking photograph capturing a crew member looking out from the cargo ramp of a low-flying RAF A400M transport aircraft over a Norwegian fjord was among the standout entries in the 2026 Royal Air Force Photographic Competition. The image was taken during the NATO Exercise Cold Response drill in March and highlights the operational environment in challenging terrain.
The competition featured over 1,000 submissions showcasing a wide range of military aviation and personnel activities. Images spanned from aircraft in flight to daily life on base, offering a diverse visual record of RAF operations.
The top honor, the RAF Visual Communicator of the Year award, was presented to Sergeant “Matty” Matthews. His winning portfolio included a poignant memorial flight commemorating the Battle of Britain and a cockpit view of an A400M aircraft arriving at Helsinki Airport.
Organizers praised the quality and diversity of entries, noting the photographers’ ability to capture both dynamic action and quieter moments. The competition serves to highlight the skills of RAF personnel in visual storytelling and document the multifaceted nature of modern air operations.
