Rafael Devers returned to the San Francisco Giants’ starting lineup Tuesday night following an apology to manager Tony Vitello related to a misunderstanding during Sunday’s game. The first baseman’s frustration was evident after he was removed as a pinch-runner late in the ninth inning of a 2-1 loss to the Miami Marlins.
In that game, after Devers reached base on a leadoff walk in the ninth inning, Vitello sent Jonah Cox to pinch-run. Devers appeared to reject the substitution, waving Cox off before walking angrily into the dugout. The incident sparked discussion about Devers’ displeasure with the decision.
On Tuesday, speaking through interpreter Erwin Higueros, Devers clarified the situation. He explained that he had previously informed Vitello of a hamstring issue, leading him to believe the pinch-running change was due to injury concerns. “It was a misunderstanding,” Devers said. “Two days prior to that, I had told the manager that I had a problem with my hamstring and I thought that was the reason that he was taking me out of the game.” He added that the reaction was blown out of proportion and that he had apologized, calling it the right course of action.
Devers and Vitello reportedly discussed the episode during the team’s flight from Miami to San Francisco on Sunday night, helping to resolve any lingering tensions. The first baseman contributed to the Giants’ 3-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday, recording one hit in four at-bats and driving in a run.
The incident marked a brief disruption amid the season, with both player and manager seeking to move past the moment and focus on the team’s ongoing performance.
