Ajinkya Rahane has announced his retirement from international cricket, concluding a career that spanned more than 15 years. The 38-year-old batsman represented India in 85 Test matches, accumulating 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, including 12 centuries and 26 half-centuries. In addition, Rahane scored 2,962 runs across 90 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and featured in 20 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). He made his international debut in 2011 and played his final match for India against the West Indies in July 2023.

Known for his calm demeanor and technical proficiency, Rahane delivered some of his most memorable innings on foreign soil. Notable performances include centuries at Wellington, Lord’s, and Melbourne. He is perhaps best remembered for his leadership during India’s challenging tour of Australia in the 2020-21 season. After India was dismissed for just 36 runs in the first Test at Adelaide, Rahane responded with a composed century in the Boxing Day Test and captained a depleted team to a historic 2-1 series victory.

Rahane’s retirement prompted tributes from across the cricketing fraternity. Former India opener Virender Sehwag described him as “one of the most underrated cricketers,” while pacer Mohammed Shami lauded his “class, discipline, and unwavering commitment.” Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah highlighted Rahane’s “grace and humility” both on and off the field.

Acknowledging that his playing career has come to an end, Rahane emphasized that his connection to cricket would continue. He expressed his desire to support and mentor younger players, stating, “My journey with the game doesn’t end here.” He closed his retirement announcement by signing off with his Test cap number: “Cap No.278, signing off.”
