Despite persistent rain in Tokyo, Malaysian national equestrian rider N. Shoorendran remains optimistic about his prospects at the ongoing Asian Games. Shoorendran and his horse, Limelight AD, have completed their familiarisation round at the JRA Equestrian Park in Setagaya Ward, where the show jumping competition officially begins today.
The weather in Japan’s capital has been marked by continuous showers, raising concerns for participants in the physically demanding show jumping discipline. However, the 33-year-old rider, who is based in Luxembourg, reported that both he and Limelight AD have adapted well to the conditions. He noted that the horse is adjusting to the cooler temperatures and that their recent practice went smoothly, highlighting Limelight’s relaxed demeanor during the familiarisation session.
Shoorendran also mentioned that following a veterinary check, he will commence the individual competition on October 3. He acknowledged that while the ongoing rain can be uncomfortable, it keeps the temperature lower, which is preferable for the horse’s performance.
As Malaysia’s sole representative in equestrian events at the Games, Shoorendran aims to secure a place among the top 20 riders who will advance to Sunday’s final round. The competition features a strong field, including several Olympic-level athletes. Despite this, Shoorendran emphasized his focus remains on his own performance and his partnership with Limelight AD, expressing confidence in their potential to contend for a podium finish.
At the previous Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China, Shoorendran placed 12th in the individual show jumping competition with a time of 81.47 seconds, riding a different horse, Wanskjaer Cuneo. This year, he is hoping to improve on that result with Limelight AD amid challenging weather conditions.
