Ras Al Khaimah has inaugurated a specialized testing facility for autonomous vehicles and expanded its RoboTaxi trials to Al Dhait South, marking a significant advancement in the emirate’s efforts to develop a future-oriented transport network.
The Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA) officially launched the Autonomous Vehicle Sandbox initiative alongside its autonomous mobility framework on October 30. The event, held at the InterContinental Ras Al Khaimah Mina Al Arab Resort, was attended by His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, as well as dignitaries including Zeng Jixin, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the UAE, and Oubaoiqi, Consul General of China in Dubai and the Northern Emirates.
The Autonomous Vehicle Sandbox is designed to offer a dedicated environment for testing and evaluating self-driving technologies, enabling developers and companies specializing in autonomous vehicles and smart mobility solutions to trial their innovations under controlled yet realistic conditions. The facility includes routes and resources necessary for conducting technical assessments that simulate actual operating environments. Its establishment aims to verify the efficiency and safety of emerging technologies before they move into broader deployment, adhering to regulatory frameworks and safety requirements.
In conjunction with the unveiling of this facility, RAKTA confirmed the expansion of its RoboTaxi autonomous vehicle testing to Al Dhait South. This extension builds on initial trials launched earlier in 2026 on Al Marjan Island, where the autonomous vehicles have collectively covered more than 21,000 kilometers. The data and operational knowledge gained from these trials have been instrumental in evaluating vehicle performance, assessing readiness, and identifying operational needs in real-world settings.
The expansion represents RAKTA’s phased strategy for assessing autonomous mobility technologies across diverse locations and environments, with the objective of eventually integrating such solutions into the broader transport infrastructure of Ras Al Khaimah. This approach follows previous autonomous vehicle initiatives in the emirate, including RoboBus trials on Al Marjan Island, which helped provide foundational experience in operating self-driving public transport systems.
Beyond serving as a testing site, the Autonomous Vehicle Sandbox is intended to foster collaboration among technical experts, researchers, regulatory bodies, and industry partners. This integrated ecosystem aims to accelerate the development of autonomous mobility technologies and contribute to the emirate’s larger goal of establishing a smart, sustainable, and efficient transportation network that aligns with technological advancements and future urban mobility needs.
