Ram has introduced the On Board Power System across all trim levels of its Ram 1500 pickup, offering drivers the ability to use their truck as a portable power source. Priced at $995, this system provides up to 2 kilowatts of electricity through built-in outlets located in the truck bed, enabling users to operate tools, appliances, or other electrical devices without the need for a separate generator.

The On Board Power System is designed to meet the needs of tradespeople and outdoor enthusiasts who commonly rely on portable generators to supply power at job sites or remote locations. By integrating the generator into the vehicle, Ram aims to eliminate the inconvenience and extra expense associated with hauling standalone power equipment.

According to recent testing by the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, the system successfully powered devices such as microwave ovens, lamps, and fans while the truck’s engine was running. The setup supports standard electrical connectors, including power strips, provided the total load stays within the system’s output limits.

Ram’s competitor automakers, Ford and General Motors, offer comparable onboard power solutions in their pickup trucks. Ford introduced its Pro Power Onboard feature in 2021, with power capacities ranging from 2 kilowatts up to 9.6 kilowatts in select models, including the now-discontinued all-electric Ford Lightning. The higher-capacity packages can supply enough electricity to power a small house or food truck for several hours.

General Motors has also equipped some of its heavy-duty pickups with similar power delivery systems, matching the offerings of its Detroit counterparts in both performance and pricing.

The availability of integrated power systems reflects a growing trend in the truck market, particularly among blue-collar users who prioritize versatility and convenience. By providing onboard electricity, manufacturers seek to enhance the functional appeal of their vehicles beyond traditional transportation.
