Syrian designer Rami Al-Ali showcased his Autumn/Winter 2026-2027 couture collection at Paris Fashion Week, drawing inspiration from the shared heritage and landscapes of the Middle East. The Dubai-based couturier’s presentation, titled "Threads of Light: A New Dawn," explored themes of identity, craftsmanship, and natural light, reflecting the cultural connections that span across the Gulf region, Syria, and beyond.
Al-Ali’s collection sought to evoke the shifting hues of the desert from dawn to dusk through a carefully curated color palette ranging from pearlescent whites and golds to shimmering grays and blacks. The garments incorporated elements inspired by traditional Middle Eastern attire and environments. For instance, the opening look featured geometric folds and mother-of-pearl embellishments referencing the ghutra, a square headscarf commonly worn in the Gulf. Al-Ali highlighted that when adapted for women, the ghutra symbolizes resilience and protection.
The collection also incorporated textures and materials linked to the region’s desert heritage. Layered mother-of-pearl sequins and crystals mimicked the rough yet luxurious texture of palm trunks, appearing on sleek column gowns. One asymmetrical gold dress drew inspiration from the woven fabric of traditional desert tents, combining a natural feel with a refined finish.
Central to Al-Ali’s work was a dialogue between heritage and modernity. Traditional craftsmanship was reinterpreted through contemporary couture techniques, resulting in pieces that celebrate regional culture while embracing innovation. Al-Ali described the collection as expressing the interconnectedness of past and future, memory and imagination, as well as place and identity.
The collection further paid homage to the Middle East’s historic role as a cultural crossroads along the Silk Road, through motifs including damask patterns, gold-leaf detailing, and stylized botanical forms. This was intended to emphasize the region’s longstanding influence on trade, architecture, poetry, music, and collective memory.
Al-Ali previously made history as the first Syrian designer to secure a spot on the official Paris Fashion Week calendar last year. His designs have gained international recognition, favored by celebrities such as Amal Clooney, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez, and Jessica Chastain. Known for combining Middle Eastern heritage with Western design sensibilities, Al-Ali is celebrated for creating flowing silhouettes embellished with intricate and playful detailing.
