The Los Angeles Rams began their 2024 training camp Sunday with attention focused on their quarterback depth behind starter Matthew Stafford. Stafford, the reigning NFL Most Valuable Player returning for his 18th season, was held out of the initial practice in a planned effort to manage his workload. This move directed the spotlight toward the Rams’ backup options, primarily rookie Ty Simpson and fourth-year pro Stetson Bennett, as they commenced their competition to serve as Stafford’s immediate understudy.
Simpson, taken 13th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, entered camp without flash but with steady execution. The Rams selected him with high expectations, hoping he can ultimately succeed Stafford as the franchise’s starting quarterback. The Alabama product completed several short passes during practice, though his deep throw to tight end Terrance Ferguson was broken up by cornerback Cam Lampkin.
Bennett, who led Georgia to two national championships in college and was selected in the fourth round of the 2023 draft, shared reps behind Stafford last summer while the starter recovered from a back injury. The veteran quarterback showed competitive spirit, completing passes to receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams as well as running back Kyren Williams. However, he also suffered a turnover when a deep pass intended for Adams was tipped and intercepted by safety Kamren Kinchens.
Rams offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase acknowledged the complexity of the quarterback role in the team’s offense, noting the demands placed on the players before the snap in terms of formations, motion, and adjustments. He praised both Bennett and Simpson for their willingness to compete and their work ethic.
The quarterback competition will continue over 10 more training camp sessions, with additional preseason practices featuring joint work with the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints, as well as preseason games against the Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints, and Los Angeles Chargers.
Monday’s practice is scheduled to include Stafford for the first time, following head coach Sean McVay’s plan to have the starting quarterback participate in the second and fourth sessions within each four-day training block.
Elsewhere on the roster, offensive lineman Justin Dedich was placed on the non-football injury list. Dedich, a third-year player and former USC starter, appeared in six games last season. Running back Jarquez Hunter also made a notable play with a long run during practice.
As the Rams prepare for their 18th season with Stafford at the helm, establishing reliable quarterback depth behind the veteran remains a priority for a team widely considered a Super Bowl contender.
