Australia extended its dominance at the Commonwealth Games with a strong medal haul on Saturday, further solidifying its lead atop the standings. The Australian delegation secured 12 gold medals on the day, significantly outpacing England and Nigeria, which each claimed three golds.

In the pool, Australian swimmers delivered several standout performances. Sam Short spearheaded a clean sweep for Australia in the men’s 400m freestyle, while Mollie O’Callaghan and Lani Pallister continued their impressive runs by clinching the top two spots in the women’s 200m freestyle. Pallister had also previously captured gold in the women’s 400m freestyle event. In the women’s 50m butterfly, Alex Perkins took gold ahead of South Africa’s Erin Gallagher and New Zealand’s Hazel Ouwehand.

The highlight of Saturday night was Australia’s commanding win in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay. The team set a new Commonwealth Games record and finished nearly five seconds ahead of the rest of the field, with England and Wales earning silver and bronze respectively.

Australian success extended beyond swimming into gymnastics, where the women’s team edged out Canada to claim the team title. On the netball court, Australia began its title defense with a dominant 99-38 victory over Tonga. England made a strong statement as well, defeating Northern Ireland 83-34 ahead of their anticipated pool match against Australia. Scotland, meanwhile, suffered a 74-44 loss to New Zealand, the 2022 bronze medallists, in the competition’s opening match.

With these performances, Australia appears poised to maintain its commanding position in the Commonwealth Games medal tally as the event progresses.
