ARLINGTON — Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager is showing signs of improvement but remains day-to-day as he recovers from a concussion sustained earlier this month, team officials said Monday.
Seager participated in on-field activities including throwing, defensive drills, and running alongside teammates before Sunday’s series finale against the San Diego Padres at Globe Life Field. Despite this progress, Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young emphasized the need for caution, noting that Seager has not yet cleared the team’s concussion protocol.
“We can’t put him in harm’s way,” Young said. “We’ve got to make sure he’s 100%. There are multiple tests that he has to pass as [part] of a very specific concussion protocol, and with that, we’ve got to make sure he’s back to normal before we get him back on the field.”
Manager Skip Schumaker added that Seager will accompany the team on the road this week but did not provide a timeline for his potential return. The 32-year-old infielder has missed nine consecutive games since suffering a mild concussion in a June 11 collision at home plate with Kansas City Royals catcher Carter Jensen.
Seager’s struggles this season have been compounded by earlier injuries. After missing three weeks due to lower back inflammation, he appeared in only five games before the concussion. His offensive numbers reflect ongoing challenges, with a career-low batting line of .186/.284/.373 across 47 games. However, he remains a power contributor, ranking tied for second on the team with nine home runs. Notably, Seager hit two home runs in the short span between his two injuries.
Meanwhile, catcher Danny Jansen, sidelined since June 3 with a right forearm strain, made strides in his own recovery. Prior to Saturday’s game, Jansen threw from 60 feet for the first time since the injury. He has also resumed hitting and catching bullpen sessions and will advance into a progressive throwing program.
Both players’ rehabilitation progress will be closely monitored as the Rangers seek to stabilize their lineup amid a stretch of injuries.
