A police officer who took his own life in May has been revealed as a serial rapist responsible for violent attacks on at least nine women over a 14-year period. Alan Greer, 47, who served with Strathclyde Police for 17 years, died at his home in North Lanarkshire while under criminal investigation. The full extent of his offences came to light only after his death.

Greer's criminal conduct was first disclosed in late 2025 when a woman reported that he had raped her in 2012. At the time, she had called the police to report a crime, and Greer apparently returned alone to her home and assaulted her. This complaint triggered one of Police Scotland’s largest anti-corruption inquiries, uncovering eight additional victims, including five sex workers. Several of the attacks were so violent that investigators believe Greer would have faced attempted murder charges had he lived.

Investigators found evidence that Greer used police databases to monitor his victims and conceal his activities. Following the initial allegation, police seized seven mobile phones and a laptop from his home during a raid on April 24. Thousands of explicit and violent videos were recovered, showing that Greer had exploited hundreds of sex workers during his career, often under pseudonyms. Among the victims identified so far are two fellow police officers.

Greer was suspended from duty following the raid but was released without charges while investigations continued. Police Scotland stated there were no discernible "red flags" during his service to indicate his criminal behavior. Greer’s family and colleagues were reportedly unaware of his double life as a violent offender.

The case has been compared to the 2021 Metropolitan Police scandal involving Wayne Couzens, who was convicted of the rape and murder of Sarah Everard. Police sources described Greer's offences as “truly shocking” and expressed concern about missed opportunities for earlier intervention. Authorities have emphasized the bravery of the initial victim in coming forward, which ultimately exposed Greer’s long-term abuses of power.

Social work officers, accompanied by local police, visited Greer’s home the day before his death, following the emergence of the allegations. No suspicious circumstances were reported in connection with his suicide.

The investigation into Greer’s crimes remains ongoing, with police continuing to examine digital evidence and seeking to identify further victims. Support services for survivors of sexual violence have been made available to those affected.
