A rare black-crowned night heron has been recorded on the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate in south-west England as part of an ongoing river restoration project aimed at revitalizing the local ecosystem. The bird was captured over three consecutive days by a camera monitoring an area where conservationists have allowed the River Aller to return to a more natural, meandering course.

The restoration initiative has transformed a previously controlled and narrow river channel into a habitat featuring smaller streams, pools, and wetlands, promoting biodiversity. Project manager Ben Eardley highlighted the heron's appearance as a positive sign, noting the species is considered scarce in the UK and is rarely observed. The black-crowned night heron, which typically measures around 66 centimeters and is mainly active at night, is more commonly found across Africa, Asia, the Americas, and mainland Europe. The first confirmed breeding of the bird in the UK was recorded in Somerset in 2017.

Holnicote Estate has seen a rise in various bird species following the restoration efforts, including white-tailed eagles, white storks, and cranes. White-tailed eagles, reintroduced on the Isle of Wight after extinction in the UK, have been spotted near the beaver habitats created as part of the project. Storks and cranes have been observed throughout the estate. Eardley said the area serves as a refuge for wildlife, particularly significant as much of southern England is experiencing dry conditions.

The estate is supporting a range of fauna beyond birds, with water voles, otters, pine martens, and grass snakes also benefiting from the wetter, more diverse landscape. Aquatic species detected in the restored river include trout, sticklebacks, eels, and European bullhead fish.

England has lost approximately 90% of its wetlands over the past five centuries, prompting various restoration efforts nationwide. Inspired by successful projects in Oregon, USA, Holnicote’s river “reset” allows water to spread naturally across the floodplain, slowing flow rates and reducing flood risk while enhancing habitat complexity.

Eardley reported that the changes have led to increased numbers of reptiles, amphibians, and insects, which in turn attract predatory species such as the night heron and eagles. The return of such species is seen as a visible marker of improving ecosystem diversity and health on the estate. The livestream footage capturing the night heron has drawn public interest, demonstrating growing engagement with ongoing conservation work.
