A 5-year-old boy died unexpectedly during a family vacation in Oregon after developing a rare medical condition. Justin Vu, the son of Terese Peden and Viet Vu from Denver, Colorado, began experiencing stomach pain on the fourth day of their trip in late June. According to Peden, the symptoms rapidly worsened, prompting her to take Justin to a hospital for treatment.

Following admission, doctors diagnosed the boy with Systemic Capillary Leak Syndrome (SCLS), also known as Clarkson’s Disease, a rare disorder characterized by sudden fluid leakage from blood vessels into surrounding tissues. Despite five days of hospitalization, Justin’s condition deteriorated, and he passed away on July 8.

Peden described the rapid progression of the illness as devastating, highlighting the challenges of recognizing and treating such an uncommon disease. The family had traveled to Oregon to visit relatives when the symptoms first appeared. Medical experts note that SCLS is extremely rare and often difficult to diagnose, contributing to the severity of outcomes in some cases.

The loss has deeply affected the Vu family, who have called attention to the importance of awareness regarding rare diseases and the need for timely medical intervention.
