A rare two-headed diamondback terrapin hatchling was recently discovered on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The unusual turtle was found at a protected nesting site in Wellfleet and subsequently taken to the Cape Wildlife Centre for observation and care.

The hatchling exhibited bicephaly, a developmental anomaly characterized by the presence of two distinct heads. This condition arises when conjoined twins do not fully separate during embryonic development. While such cases are uncommon, bicephaly is most frequently observed in species like turtles and snakes, though it can occur across a range of animals.

The Cape Wildlife Centre shared photographs of the terrapin, highlighting its unique physical characteristics. Experts note that while the condition is rare, occurrences of two-headed turtles offer valuable insight into developmental biology and the challenges faced by animals with such anomalies in the wild.
