Junior Caminero’s 15th home run of the season ignited a five-run eighth inning as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Los Angeles Angels 8-3 on Sunday in Anaheim, avoiding a series sweep. Victor Mesa Jr. contributed a two-run homer in the decisive frame, breaking a 3-3 tie and helping the Rays spoil the Angels’ season-high four-game winning streak.
The Angels took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when Denzer Guzman’s two-out single drove in Jo Adell, putting Los Angeles ahead 1-0. However, the Rays responded in the third after starting pitcher Grayson Rodriguez exited the game with lower back tightness. Reliever Chase Silseth yielded a two-run single to Chandler Simpson, giving Tampa Bay a 2-1 advantage.
Ben Williamson extended the Rays’ lead in the fourth with his first home run of the season, pushing the score to 3-1. In the fifth, Los Angeles rallied as Donovan Walton hit his first homer as an Angel to narrow the gap to 3-2. Jo Adell’s RBI single tied the game at 3-3, with left-hander Ian Seymour charged for both runs.
The pivotal eighth inning saw the Rays’ offense explode. Caminero’s solo shot opened the scoring, followed by Hunter Feduccia’s single that brought in Richie Palacios. Mesa then added a two-run homer, his second of the season, putting Tampa Bay ahead 8-3. The five-run rally was all charged to Angels right-hander Sam Bachman, who took the loss and fell to 1-1.
On the mound for Tampa Bay, right-hander Kevin Kelly earned the win, striking out three over two innings. Kelly was the third of six Rays pitchers used in what unfolded as a bullpen game.
Los Angeles briefly threatened in the bottom of the eighth against Craig Kimbrel. Adell was hit by a pitch, and Nolan Schanuel followed with a walk. Nick Madrigal then drew a walk with one out to load the bases, but the Angels were unable to capitalize, sealing their defeat.
The Rays’ victory ended the Angels’ four-game winning streak and improved Tampa Bay’s standing in the three-game series.
