The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are investigating allegations of fraud, breach of trust, and money laundering linked to procurement practices within Alberta’s health care system, according to a recently revealed court filing. The letter, dated October 15, offers new insight into the potential criminal offences under scrutiny in an ongoing probe relating to Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services (AHS).

The investigation, which was publicly confirmed by the RCMP in early 2025, focuses on the province’s health care purchasing processes. Earlier this year, officers conducted search operations as part of their inquiry, though details about the scope and nature of the offences have been scarce until now.

The letter was authored by Tom Andreopoulos, a Crown prosecutor with the Complex Prosecutions Bureau at Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney-General. Addressed to legal representatives for the Alberta government, AHS, and Athana Mentzelopoulos, the agency’s former chief executive, the correspondence outlines the prosecutorial role in the investigation. Andreopoulos states that his office is providing advisory support and will handle the prosecution of any charges stemming from the RCMP’s findings regarding alleged misconduct in procurement activities.

Two other Ontario Crown prosecutors, Niall Gilks and Alana Rodrigo, are also assisting with the case, according to the letter.

Representatives for the RCMP and Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney-General declined to provide additional comments, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Officials from Alberta Health and AHS have not publicly responded to the revelations.

The inquiry arises amid broader concerns over procurement irregularities within Alberta’s health sector, highlighting potential systemic issues related to contract awarding and management. The involvement of senior executives, such as Mentzelopoulos, has intensified scrutiny of internal governance at AHS.

As the investigation continues, prosecutors and law enforcement agencies will determine whether formal charges can be pursued. The case remains under active consideration, with further developments expected as the legal process unfolds.
