New research from the University of Cambridge highlights the wide-ranging benefits of reading for people of all ages, emphasizing its positive effects on brain health, mental wellbeing, and cognitive function. The findings suggest that engaging with reading material—regardless of the type or format—can contribute to improved attention, memory, and emotional health from childhood through old age.

The study analyzed data from thousands of adults and children, revealing that children who develop a habit of reading for pleasure early in life tend to exhibit better memory retention, stronger academic performance, and fewer mental health challenges. Reading skills have been linked to other areas of cognitive development, such as mathematical ability, as both share underlying cognitive processes including language skills, memory, and executive function. In a sample of children aged 7 to 11, participation in an eight-week reading program was shown to increase grey matter volume in the brain, according to MRI scans.

For adults, the research indicates that reading can lower stress levels, reduce feelings of loneliness, and enhance empathy and overall wellbeing. Older adults who regularly engage with books, newspapers, or magazines have a 33 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and show slower rates of cognitive decline. Experts also pointed to the additional benefits of shared reading activities such as book clubs and reading groups, which offer social interaction that can further alleviate isolation, particularly for individuals with limited mobility.

Professor Barbara Sahakian, a clinical neuropsychologist involved in the research, emphasized that it is never too late to begin reading and enjoy its benefits. She highlighted the importance of fostering a love for reading in children by helping them find topics that genuinely interest them, making reading a gateway to lifelong cognitive and mental health advantages. Dr. Christelle Langley similarly stressed the need to introduce young people to reading as early as possible.

The study underscores that benefits are not confined to any specific genre or reading format. Whether one reads classic literature, comics, children’s books, or substantial non-fiction works, the act of reading itself appears to positively influence brain structure and connectivity. These findings support the idea that engaging with printed material can be an accessible and valuable tool for maintaining brain health, reducing the risk of mental decline, and enriching mental and emotional wellbeing across the lifespan.
