Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa defended his squad’s attitude and confirmed lineup changes ahead of their La Liga fixture against Girona on Friday night at the Santiago Bernabéu. The team enters the match after recent setbacks, including a 2-1 home defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday and a 2-1 loss to Mallorca in the league last weekend. These results have left Real Madrid seven points behind league leaders Barcelona with eight matches remaining.
Arbeloa was questioned on whether another defeat would effectively end the club’s title ambitions, to which he emphasized the urgency of each upcoming fixture. “The players know every game is vital and there is less margin for error,” he said, highlighting that the upcoming midweek trip to Munich for the Champions League would not divert focus from the league encounter with Girona. The Spanish coach added he has been in direct contact with his players, who remain motivated to secure a win for their supporters.
Addressing criticisms regarding players’ commitment, Arbeloa rejected suggestions of a lack of effort within the squad. “It is vital to have good attitude and commitment. The players are the best in the world, but talent alone is not enough if we want to be consistent,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of mentality in the team’s performances.
Midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who has faced scrutiny following the recent defeats, received particular support from the coach. Arbeloa confirmed Camavinga will start Friday’s match, stating the midfielder has been a key figure under his management and retains the confidence of the club and coaching staff.
The coach also announced changes in the starting lineup, with Jude Bellingham and Eder Militao coming into the team. However, Ferland Mendy will miss the Girona game due to a muscle injury and is expected to return by Wednesday.
Girona, who secured a victory against Villarreal on Monday, will be without their top scorer Vladislav Vanat for the remainder of the season after the forward suffered a hamstring tear. The Catalan side currently remains in a relegation battle, adding significance to their clash against Real Madrid.
