FC United of Manchester secured a replay against Altrincham in the FA Cup after a goalless draw at Moss Lane on Saturday. Despite ongoing struggles in their league campaign, where they have only recorded one victory so far this season, FC United demonstrated notable resilience and defensive discipline to hold a strong Altrincham side.
Manager Mark Beesley praised his players for their determination and work rate. “The lads gave everything and ran themselves into the ground,” he said. Beesley acknowledged that the team may have benefited from a bit of fortune during the match but felt the result was deserved given their performance. He also noted an opportunity in the closing moments when striker Adam Le Fondre was put clear by a throw from Dan Atherton but his weak finish was easily saved by Altrincham’s goalkeeper Harry Isted.
Altrincham controlled much of the possession and territorial advantage throughout the game but were unable to break down the visitors’ stubborn defense. The Robins’ best chance early on came when Sam Taylor blocked a turnover and fired a shot straight at Atherton. Aidan Barlow also had a chance but saw his effort deflected for a corner.
The second half saw Altrincham increase their attacking pressure. Tom Crawford’s curling effort was tipped over by Atherton, and Sam Barnes headed just wide. Crawford came close again after a pass from Taylor, but defender Matty Devine made a goal-line clearance. After another promising attempt by Jimmy Knowles was blocked by Dec Evans, Altrincham’s confidence appeared to wane. This shift allowed FC United to become more adventurous in attack.
FC United’s late surge included Le Fondre testing goalkeeper Betts with a shot that required a scramble to save. Adam Sudworth also had a header from a Matty Grivosti free-kick, but it missed the target. The visitors’ spirited finish earned loud applause from their traveling supporters.
Altrincham manager Neil Gibson commended the effort of FC United, stating, “They put in an immense effort, putting their bodies on the line, and we asked questions of them.” Gibson acknowledged that his team performed well in most areas but lacked composure in the final third. “If we’d been clinical, and scored early, then I think we win comfortably,” he said. Gibson also noted that the shape and discipline that helped create earlier chances broke down in the last ten minutes, making the closing stages more disorderly.
Both teams will now prepare for the replay, with FC United hoping to build on their spirited display and Altrincham eager to convert possession dominance into goals.
