Rebel’s Romance secured a victory in the Group Two Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket on Friday, marking the 22nd win in the eight-year-old’s extensive career. Trained by Charlie Appleby at Moulton Paddocks, the son of Dubawi has demonstrated remarkable longevity and versatility, having won races across six countries including North America, Dubai, Hong Kong, and mainland Europe. The latest triumph added approximately £93,000 to the horse’s career earnings, which now exceed £12 million.

This win came after a 131-day break since Rebel’s Romance last raced and secured victory in Dubai earlier this year. Despite his advancing age, the horse exhibited his characteristic competitiveness and resilience, narrowly defeating stablemate Arabian Crown by half a length. Appleby described the experience of watching Rebel’s Romance race as comparable to seeing a family member perform, highlighting the deep connection he feels with the horse. He also noted the exceptional care and management provided by his team, which has contributed to the horse’s sustained form and well-being.

Appleby chose the Princess of Wales’s Stakes as Rebel’s Romance’s summer target, citing its suitably challenging nature and the horse’s affinity for turf surfaces, a determination that came after the horse’s breakthrough at Newmarket in 2022. While Rebel’s Romance has participated in prestigious events such as the Breeders’ Cup in the past, Appleby indicated a cautious approach toward future campaigns, emphasizing that decisions will be made on a race-by-race basis depending on the horse’s enthusiasm and condition.

Alongside Rebel’s Romance, Appleby enjoyed additional success on the opening day of the July Festival with Inner City Blues capturing the Group 2 July Stakes. The two-year-old colt maintained an unbeaten record, defeating competitors including Coventry Stakes runner-up Adaay Of Scarlett by just over a length under jockey William Buick. Appleby expressed confidence in Inner City Blues’ physical attributes and performance, while acknowledging uncertainty about the colt’s next racing distance, which may extend to seven furlongs based on further assessments.

The weekend’s results provided a welcome boost for Appleby, who has experienced challenges throughout the current season. Rebel’s Romance’s enduring presence at the top level and Inner City Blues’ promising start offer encouraging signs for the trainer’s stable heading into the remainder of the summer racing calendar.
