A record number of runners have applied to take part in the 2027 London Marathon, which will be held over two days for the first time in its history to accommodate 100,000 participants. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 24, and Sunday, April 25.
Organizers received approximately 1,338,544 ballot applications from both UK and international entrants, marking an increase of more than 200,000 applications compared to the 1,133,813 who applied for the 2026 race. This surge represents an 18 percent rise in demand and more than a doubling of applicants since 2024.
Despite the expanded format, the high level of interest means that the chances of securing a place remain limited. With 100,000 slots available across the two days, the odds of gaining entry through the public ballot stand at roughly one in thirteen. However, the actual odds are somewhat lower, as not all places are distributed via the ballot system; thousands of entries are reserved for charity partners, championship runners, affiliated clubs, and international participants.
The split-day marathon will feature 45,000 runners on the Saturday and 55,000 on the Sunday. Organizers have emphasized that this two-day arrangement is a one-off event designed to meet exceptional demand and is not expected to become a regular format.
Hugh Brasher, chief executive of London Marathon Events, described the event as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for the record number of participants. He also highlighted the significance of the marathon in supporting charitable causes, noting that the double-day race could raise more than £150 million for various organizations. The National Autistic Society will serve as the official charity partner for the 2027 marathon.
Runners who are successful in the ballot will soon embark on their preparation for the event, with organizers anticipating an unprecedented turnout for the iconic race.
