A known parasite commonly affecting poultry, the red mite Dermanyssus gallinae, has been identified as a potential threat to urban pet budgerigars, particularly those housed in rooms located near roofs. Typically associated with poultry houses where it causes significant irritation, the mite’s impact on small companion birds was detailed in a 1979 veterinary thesis submitted to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. The study highlighted that wild birds nesting in the eaves of buildings can transmit the mite to domestic pets and humans. Once the wild birds leave their nests, the mites may migrate indoors through openings such as windows.

Budgerigars kept upstairs in proximity to the roof area are especially susceptible to infestation. The mites feed nocturnally, often causing affected birds to become restless overnight. Physical signs in infested budgerigars include scratching or pecking at feathers, reduced appetite, and, in severe cases, anemia. Because the mites are largely absent from feathers during daylight hours, diagnosing an infestation can be challenging. Vets typically recommend bringing the bird to the clinic in its cage without cleaning it beforehand, as mites may be detected in the cage materials on the floor. In some cases, trial treatments are advised if clinical symptoms suggest a red mite problem.

Another condition discussed is sebaceous adenitis, an uncommon autoimmune disease seen notably in certain dog breeds such as standard poodles, akitas, and samoyeds. This disorder involves the immune system attacking the sebaceous glands within hair follicles, leading to inflammation and gland destruction. These glands produce sebum, an oily substance that lubricates and protects the skin. Loss of sebum compromises the skin’s waterproofing and defense against infections, leaving animals prone to secondary bacterial and yeast infections, which further exacerbate itching and hair loss.

Early diagnosis of sebaceous adenitis, typically confirmed through biopsy analysis by a pathologist, improves prospects for long-term management. Laboratory examination reveals inflammatory infiltration of sebaceous glands during initial stages, progressing to their absence as the disease advances. Treatment is generally lifelong, aiming to control symptoms and prevent further gland damage.

Experts note that persistent itching in pets should prompt veterinary consultation to identify and manage underlying causes such as mite infestation or autoimmune skin disorders.
