Red Cat Holdings, Inc., a U.S.-based provider of advanced drone and robotic solutions for defense and national security, has acquired Apium Swarm Robotics, a company specializing in distributed control systems for autonomous swarming drones and uncrewed surface vessels. The acquisition aims to strengthen Red Cat’s capabilities in autonomous swarm technology amid increasing U.S. investment in small drone innovation.

Under the terms of the deal, Apium will continue operating as an independent subsidiary, focusing on the development and scaling of its multi-agent autonomy architecture. This system enables multiple robotic platforms to coordinate dynamically, adapt to changing mission parameters, and complete objectives without continuous operator intervention. The decentralized control system supports operational resilience and flexibility, particularly in contested environments where GPS or communications may be denied.

Jeff Thompson, chief executive of Red Cat, emphasized the growing importance of autonomous drone swarming for achieving strategic and tactical advantages in modern warfare. He noted that near-peer adversaries are rapidly advancing similar technologies capable of operating in coordinated and decentralized manners, and that integrating Apium’s scalable swarm autonomy would contribute significantly to Red Cat’s offerings.

Red Cat and Apium have a collaborative history dating back to 2025, having partnered through Red Cat’s futures initiative—a program designed to accelerate the deployment of multi-domain autonomous systems. Apium’s swarm technology was demonstrated successfully using Red Cat’s drones at the U.S. Army’s 2025 ACM-UAS industry day and at Red Cat’s own innovation day in early 2026.

Founded originally in 1984 as Oravest International, Inc., Red Cat evolved through name changes before adopting its current identity in 2019. It specializes in unmanned aerial systems tailored for defense applications. Apium Swarm Robotics, established in 2016, focuses on equipping drones and robotic platforms with real-time swarming abilities that enable decentralized decision-making, mission adaptability, and collaborative behavior across numerous units.

By embedding Apium’s autonomy layer across its product family, Red Cat expects to enhance the coordination, survivability, and operational flexibility of future unmanned systems, playing a significant role in forthcoming defense strategies centered on autonomous, networked robotics.
