The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has urged the global community to increase humanitarian assistance to Sudan amid a deepening crisis marked by widespread violence and urgent needs. Speaking in Geneva, IFRC Special Envoy for Sudan, Derk Segaar, highlighted the severity of the situation following his recent visit to the country.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a violent conflict between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese military. This confrontation has resulted in at least 59,000 deaths, devastating large parts of the country. The fighting has severely affected major regions including Kordofan and Darfur, as well as the capital, Khartoum.

Segaar described Sudan as one of the largest humanitarian crises worldwide, yet one that has received insufficient international attention and funding. While some aid deliveries have managed to reach conflict-affected areas such as Kordofan and Darfur, the overall scale of destruction and displacement continues to grow. The IFRC warns that existing resources and support remain grossly inadequate to address the rising needs of millions of Sudanese civilians caught in the ongoing conflict.

This crisis has compounded Sudan's longstanding challenges, including instability and economic hardship. The IFRC is calling on governments, donors, and humanitarian organizations to mobilize increased financial and logistical support to help deliver essential services, medical care, and relief supplies. Without stronger international engagement, the suffering and instability across Sudan are expected to worsen.
