Brayan Bello delivered a strong performance on Saturday afternoon, pitching eight innings and allowing just one run, but the Boston Red Sox fell short against the Tampa Bay Rays, losing 2-1 at Tropicana Field. The defeat leaves Boston unable to secure a playoff spot before Sunday.

The game remained tightly contested until the ninth inning when Tampa Bay broke the deadlock. With two outs, Richie Palacios delivered an RBI single that gave the Rays the go-ahead run, securing the victory on their home field.

Despite the loss, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy praised his team’s effort. “That was a hell of a baseball game,” Tracy said. He acknowledged the team’s performance overall but noted the challenges faced in the final inning.

In the ninth, the Red Sox had an opportunity to tie the game. After Caleb Durbin doubled with one out, he attempted to steal third base but was thrown out by catcher Nick Fortes on a strong throw. Jarren Duran followed with a triple but was left stranded when Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded out.

Durbin reflected on the attempt to steal third, stating, “I thought I had a window and it probably wasn’t a big enough window.” He added, “In those situations, too, you want to be sure about it.” Despite the unsuccessful base running, Tracy supported Durbin’s aggressive approach, saying he had no issue with the decision and credited Durbin for trying to create an opportunity.

With the loss, the Red Sox must wait until Sunday to confirm their place in the postseason, highlighting the tight race as they seek to close out the regular season.
