The Boston Red Sox are nearing the potential return of injured shortstop Trevor Story after more than three months sidelined with a sports hernia. Story, who underwent surgery following persistent discomfort since spring training, appeared in a minor league rehabilitation game for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, playing four innings and going 1 for 2 at the plate. The Red Sox plan at least two more rehab outings for Story on Tuesday and Wednesday, pitching the possibility that he could be activated from the injured list as soon as Friday.
“I’ve had my fair share of rehabs, and I’ve been through it,” Story said Monday at Fenway Park. “So I feel like I know when I’m good to go.” He emphasized that regaining his game conditioning and evaluating how his body responds to game action will guide decisions going forward.
Interim manager Chad Tracy said the team is monitoring Story’s physical condition closely, particularly how his surgically repaired groin responds to the innings pitched and his overall recovery. “We’ll see physically how he’s doing, how he feels at the plate,” Tracy explained. While a Friday return is “possible,” the club remains focused on the upcoming minor league appearances before making definitive plans. The goal is for Story to resume his role as the everyday shortstop upon his return.
In relief pitching moves, the Red Sox called up right-hander Wyatt Olds from Worcester to make his major league debut Monday. Olds pitched a perfect inning in the ninth, striking out two. He was activated to replace left-hander Raymond Burgos, who was sent back to the minors after throwing four innings in Sunday’s rain-delayed game. The 27-year-old Olds, a 2021 seventh-round draft pick, has strong strikeout numbers this season but struggled with a 5.33 ERA, showing better performance on the road than at home.
On the opposing side, the Arizona Diamondbacks placed All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte on the restricted list after he failed to report for Monday’s game at Fenway Park. Marte had traveled with the team but did not appear in the lineup, with manager Torey Lovullo citing a “personal issue” and little communication from Marte. Marte previously went on the restricted list last season following a home burglary.
Additional injury concerns for the Red Sox include Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten, both dealing with elbow issues, and Masataka Yoshida, who was evaluated for hamstring soreness. MRI results were pending before Monday’s game. Outfielder and first baseman Justin Gonzales was promoted to Double-A Portland and was set to debut Tuesday alongside Roman Anthony, who is beginning a rehab assignment after a right hand and wrist injury. Veteran outfielder Jahmai Jones was scratched from Monday’s game due to left hip soreness.
