Red wolves experienced a notable increase in wild births this spring in eastern North Carolina, raising hopes for the recovery of one of the world’s most endangered carnivores. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 23 red wolf pups were born across four wild litters this season, marking the highest number of births since 2013.

The arrival of these pups temporarily doubled the known population of wild red wolves in the region. Currently, approximately 22 adult and adolescent wolves are estimated to roam near the Alligator River and Pocosin Lakes national wildlife refuges, the primary sites for the decades-long restoration program. While some pups did not survive—reflecting a typical survival rate of around 50 percent—at least 12 to 16 young wolves remain active on the landscape, monitored through radio telemetry and remote cameras.

The red wolf population had once dwindled to perilous lows, with only single-digit counts in recent years. No wild births were recorded from 2018 to 2021, a period that experts feared could seriously jeopardize the species' survival. This spring's reproductive success offers a significant, if cautious, sign of recovery amid ongoing challenges.

Red wolves were driven near extinction in the southeastern United States during the 1970s due to habitat loss, hunting, and human-related mortality. After extensive captive breeding, they were reintroduced to North Carolina’s Albemarle Peninsula in 1987, leading to a peak wild population exceeding 120 individuals by 2011. However, their numbers have since declined, impacted largely by vehicle collisions along busy highways such as Highway 64 and illegal shootings.

The species’ status has been influenced by shifting federal policies, legal disputes, and conflicts with local landowners. In recent years, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has renewed its commitment to the red wolf recovery program, with plans to release captive-bred wolves back into the wild to bolster the population. Officials emphasize that sustained births in the wild are critical to establishing self-sustaining populations across the wolves’ historic range.

Joe Madison, the recovery program manager for the Fish and Wildlife Service in North Carolina, described the conservation effort as slow and fraught with difficulties but essential. “They are a missing piece of the ecosystem out here,” Madison said in 2024, pointing to the ecological imbalance caused by their absence.

Experts note that reducing mortality, especially from roadkill, is vital to the species’ survival. To that end, state and federal agencies have allocated tens of millions of dollars for constructing wildlife crossings in and around the refuges, with environmental groups contributing additional funding. Ron Sutherland, chief scientist for the Wildlands Network, stressed that protecting these wolves from human-caused deaths and ensuring a sufficient number of unrelated animals to form breeding pairs could enable the population to expand rapidly in the coming years.

While challenges remain, the recent birth surge represents a hopeful milestone in the ongoing effort to restore the critically endangered red wolf to the wild landscapes of North Carolina.
