Voices reflecting on personal experiences with the Jewish community highlight themes of generosity, kindness, and the challenges of rising anti-Semitism today.

Lesley Walker of Newark, Nottinghamshire, recounts her time in the 1960s at Maida Vale High School for Girls, where she encountered Jewish families whose warmth and affection differed markedly from her own Church of England upbringing. “Some were very well-off families, some just managing. But they all had one thing in common, which was love for their children,” she said. Her exposure to this environment led to a profound personal transformation, resulting in her marriage to a Jewish man, conversion to Judaism, and raising two Jewish daughters and three grandchildren. Walker expressed bewilderment at the increasing prevalence of anti-Semitic attitudes.

In a separate account, Vince Mudd from Roxton, Bedfordshire, shared memories from the 1970s when he worked as a buyer for Camden Motors, a Jewish-owned car company that had relocated from London to Leighton Buzzard after World War II. Facing difficulty securing a mortgage for his family home, Mudd turned to his employer, Martin Rosselman, who extended immediate financial support by providing a cheque from the company’s funds without formal conditions. Mudd recalled the gesture as emblematic of deep trust and generosity, contributing to his longstanding respect for Jewish people.

Meanwhile, Fred Berringer spoke out against what he described as agitators calling for the destruction of Israel and the Jewish community. He underscored the importance of remembering the true perpetrators of recent major terrorist attacks, noting that Jews were not responsible for the bombings and attacks in New York, London, Manchester, and Paris. His remarks serve as a reminder amid contemporary tensions and hostilities directed at Israel and Jewish populations worldwide.

Together, these personal testimonies and reflections offer a lens into the enduring bonds, generosity, and resilience within Jewish communities, as well as the enduring challenges they continue to face in the context of global anti-Semitism.
