Glenn Gibbins, a councillor with the Reform party on Sunderland City Council, has been charged with publishing a grossly offensive message on social media. The alleged post, which referenced the Nigerian community, was made in 2024, according to Northumbria Police. The force stated that the charge falls under the Communications Act 2003.

Gibbins, 66, who lives in Sunderland, is scheduled to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on August 21.
