Dan Thomas, the Welsh leader of Reform UK, has resigned from his position following his arrest on suspicion of assault and coercive behaviour. The 45-year-old, who was arrested over the weekend, announced his departure from the role citing personal reasons and expressed a desire not to distract from the party’s activities.

Thomas was appointed as Reform UK’s Welsh leader in February and subsequently led the party during the May Welsh Parliament elections. Under his leadership, Reform UK emerged as the second-largest party in the Senedd, securing a significant number of seats—nine fewer than Plaid Cymru’s 43.

Gwent Police confirmed that Thomas was arrested on Sunday, September 13, in connection with allegations of assault and controlling or coercive behaviour. He was released on bail pending further investigations.

The circumstances surrounding the allegations have not been disclosed, and no charges have been filed at this stage. Reform UK has yet to comment publicly on the situation following Thomas’s resignation.
