Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has described managing the intensity and emotional energy of his team as one of his most challenging tasks since taking charge. Speaking ahead of Sunderland’s Premier League home match against Tottenham Hotspur, Le Bris highlighted the passion his players bring to the pitch, which has occasionally made halftime discussions particularly demanding.

The Black Cats return to action following a three-week hiatus, a break that allowed them to reflect on their recent success, including a notable derby double over Newcastle United. Since their promotion last May, Sunderland have defied widespread predictions of an immediate return to the Championship. Instead, they have mounted a competitive season, positioning themselves in contention for a seventh-place finish—a standing that would grant them qualification for the UEFA Conference League next season.

Le Bris, 50, praised his squad’s consistent performance and determination throughout the campaign. “The players can be emotional at times. That’s a good thing, even if it’s not always easy to manage at half-time. For me, it shows they care,” he said, emphasizing how the team’s fervor is a key element of their success.

He acknowledged that surviving consecutive seasons in the top flight might have seemed an unrealistic target upon his arrival but credited the decision not to impose limits as a factor in their achievements. Sunderland’s victories against established clubs such as Chelsea and Newcastle have underscored their progress and ambition, according to Le Bris.

While the team has accomplished its primary objective of avoiding relegation, internal pressure remains high to maintain performance levels through the remaining fixtures. The manager expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness for the concluding stages of the season.

Sunderland will face Tottenham seeking their first home victory since early February. However, the club will be without defender Dan Ballard and midfielder Nilson Angulo, both sidelined due to injuries.
