Trainer Kim Reid is targeting the upcoming Livamol Classic at Hastings this October with Hi Yo Sass Bomb, who was runner-up in the Group 1 event two years ago. The mare is set to begin her campaign at Wanganui in the Take It Easy Tours Open over 1200 meters.
Reid expressed satisfaction with Hi Yo Sass Bomb’s condition ahead of her first race of the season, noting that the horse has shown positive signs during recent training sessions. Despite a couple of unplaced trial runs, Reid remained unconcerned, emphasizing her experience with the mare’s preparation patterns.
Last season, Hi Yo Sass Bomb had a mixed record. She kicked off with strong performances, capturing the Group 3 Grangewilliam Stud Breeders’ Stakes (1400m) and the Group 3 Thompson Handicap (1600m) in October. However, her preparation for the Group 1 Mufhasa Classic (1600m) in December was disrupted. After an unplaced effort in the Thorndon race, she placed third in the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m). Her season concluded with unplaced finishes in both the Group 3 Cuddle Stakes (1600m) and the Group 1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m).
Reid suggested that the mare’s form slumped partly due to mental fatigue, as she did not have an extended break during the previous campaign. Nonetheless, he said Hi Yo Sass Bomb has returned refreshed and is showing renewed enthusiasm in her training.
The upcoming race at Wanganui will serve as an important stepping stone for Hi Yo Sass Bomb as she aims to improve on her past performances and contend for the spring feature later this year.
