Human remains discovered this week in the Grand Canyon have been identified as those of Timothy Allen Smith, the final person missing after severe flash flooding struck the area in late August, according to the victim’s wife.

Smith, 53, a pilot from Star Valley in western Wyoming, was found Monday near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River, which flows through the Grand Canyon. His death brings the total fatalities from the flooding to three.

The other two victims, Brent Rosenkranz, 42, and John Giusti, 46, both of Granbury, Texas, were confirmed dead earlier. The three men were undertaking a multi-day hiking, fishing, and camping excursion when the sudden floods devastated the Phantom Ranch area at the canyon’s base. The flooding not only caused loss of life but also severely damaged the water pipeline that supplies the South Rim, a key infrastructure component for the park.

Authorities had been searching for Smith since the flash floods swept through the backcountry, and his recovery marks the conclusion of the search effort. The National Park Service and other agencies continue to assess the damage and monitor conditions in the canyon as recovery and repair work proceeds.
