A recent study conducted in Ohio found that replacing gas stoves with electric models significantly improved health outcomes for individuals with poorly controlled asthma. The research, initiated by MetroHealth in December 2024 and carried out in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University, revealed a 70% reduction in hospital admissions and a corresponding decrease in missed work and school days among participants after the switch.
The study measured asthma severity using a standardized scoring system, where a change of 0.5 is recognized as clinically meaningful. Researchers observed an average improvement from 2.6 to 1.5, indicating a substantial reduction in symptoms. Alongside fewer absences from daily activities, participants reported less wheezing, decreased reliance on inhalers, and fewer instances of asthma symptoms disturbing their sleep.
Air quality assessments conducted in 44 participant homes showed a significant drop in nitrogen dioxide levels—an average decrease of 70%—after gas stoves were replaced with electric units. Nitrogen dioxide is a known irritant that can exacerbate respiratory conditions such as asthma.
The study’s finding that health improvements persisted even as funding was halted was unexpected by the research team. Funding for the project was discontinued under the incoming administration of President Donald Trump, leading to an early end of the initiative.
These results underscore the potential public health benefits of reducing indoor air pollution by substituting gas stoves with electric appliances, particularly for vulnerable populations with respiratory illnesses. Further research and policy considerations may be warranted to explore broader implementation of similar interventions.
