Researchers continue to defend the widely accepted view that the Monte Verde archaeological site in southern Chile was inhabited by ancient hunter-gatherers approximately 14,500 years ago, despite recent challenges suggesting the site is significantly younger. The dispute has implications for understanding the timing and pathways of the initial human settlement of the Americas.

Monte Verde, situated about 36 miles from the Pacific coast, was first discovered in the 1970s. In 1997, scientific analysis concluded that humans occupied the site during the late Pleistocene epoch, roughly 14,500 years ago. This finding pushed back the timeline for human presence deep within South America by more than 1,500 years prior to previously accepted dates and posed a challenge to the long-standing Clovis-first model, which identifies North America’s Clovis culture—known for its distinctive stone tools—as the earliest widespread human presence south of the continental ice sheets.

However, a study published earlier this year questioned the older dating of Monte Verde. Based on different geological analyses, the research placed the site's occupation between about 4,200 and 8,200 years ago. If accurate, this younger timeline would diminish Monte Verde’s relevance in discussions about the earliest peopling of the Americas.

In response, the original Monte Verde research team, led by anthropologist Tom Dillehay of Vanderbilt University, along with another group of scientists, published critiques in the journal PaleoAmerica. They argued that the new study, led by University of Wyoming archaeologist Todd Surovell, contained fundamental flaws and lacked direct observations from the site itself. Particularly contested was the claim of a volcanic ash layer deposited approximately 11,000 years ago beneath the archaeological materials—a key piece of evidence used to support the younger dating. Dillehay stated that this ash layer had never been observed by investigators at Monte Verde since the 1970s.

Dillehay further accused the recent study of selectively using geological evidence to support a predetermined conclusion and defended the original methodology and findings of the Monte Verde project. He highlighted the site’s exceptional preservation, which has allowed researchers to recover rare organic materials, including worked wood, plant remains, seaweed, and structural evidence, providing valuable insight into human life during the late Ice Age in southern Chile.

Surovell welcomed the ongoing scientific debate and emphasized the importance of additional research by independent teams to resolve the conflicting datings. He noted that their methods and conclusions had already undergone extensive scrutiny without any identified flaws sufficiently challenging their results.

The controversy over Monte Verde's age underscores the complexities of archaeological dating and the broader effort to map the initial human migration into the Americas. The site remains a critical point of reference in discussions about early settlement patterns and the timing of human arrival in the Western Hemisphere.
