Chinese researchers are turning to bamboo as a sustainable tool in the fight against desertification, aiming to improve upon traditional methods that have relied on straw, plants, and plastic barriers. This shift emerges amid growing concerns over the limitations and environmental impacts associated with existing sand-fixing techniques.

Desertification—the process by which fertile land becomes desert due to factors such as overgrazing, deforestation, and climate change—has long challenged China, particularly in its arid northern, northwestern, and northeastern regions. Since the 1970s, efforts such as the Three-North Shelterbelt Programme, also known as the Great Green Wall, have sought to combat desert expansion through large-scale planting of shrubs, forests, and the installation of physical barriers to stabilize shifting sands.

For decades, straw checkerboard grids have been widely utilized for sand control, but their effectiveness is limited to about two to three years due to the natural degradation of the material, according to Yu Yanglun, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Forestry’s Research Institute of Wood Industry. Although plastic barriers offer greater durability, they present long-term ecological risks, as plastic decomposes very slowly and can contribute to environmental pollution. Planting shrubs such as Artemisia has also been part of the strategy but has raised health concerns related to increasing pollen allergies.

To address these challenges, the institute is advocating the use of bamboo—a fast-growing, durable, and widely available woody grass—as an alternative material for desertification control. China, which has the world’s largest bamboo forests, is set to expand high-yield bamboo plantations as part of a newly released five-year conservation plan targeting its forests and grasslands through 2030. The plan also emphasizes technological innovations aimed at replacing plastic products with biodegradable bamboo-based alternatives.

Research initiatives at the institute have developed bamboo-based sand-fixing materials, including woven squares and bag-handing barriers made from bamboo and wood fiber. These bamboo barriers, tested in Qinghai province and Inner Mongolia autonomous region, reportedly exhibit a longer lifespan ranging from three to ten years, outperforming straw grids while being renewable, biodegradable, and resistant to light aging. According to official reports, bamboo barriers can reduce overall desertification control costs by over 20 percent compared with plastic counterparts.

In addition to these physical barriers, researchers are exploring innovative approaches such as cultivating edible fungi to improve the nutrient content and stability of sandy soils, further enhancing ecological restoration efforts.

This renewed focus on bamboo reflects an evolving strategy in China’s extensive battle against desertification, emphasizing environmental sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and improved durability in combating land degradation.
