LOZOVA, Ukraine — Ukrainian forces on the front lines continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience as the conflict with Russia enters its fifth year, with signs emerging that the momentum may be shifting in Kyiv’s favor.
Jr. Lt. Ihor Vizirenko, a member of Ukraine’s military who joined shortly after the Russian invasion began, exemplifies the toll the prolonged fighting has taken on soldiers. Carrying visible injuries, including a facial tic he attributes to multiple concussions and a limp caused by back issues, Vizirenko also suffers from the less tangible psychological cost of war. He has lost ten comrades in combat and has scarcely seen his daughter, who was born after hostilities erupted.
Despite these hardships, Ukrainian troops have maintained their endurance as the conflict stretches beyond four years—surpassing the duration of World War I. This perseverance appears to be contributing to a shift in the combat landscape. In recent months, Russia’s advances across Ukrainian territory have largely reversed, and Moscow’s forces are reportedly experiencing increasing casualties. Meanwhile, Ukraine has intensified its response to Russian air attacks by carrying out strikes deep into Russian territory, targeting critical infrastructure.
Among notable Ukrainian operations was a significant aerial assault that severely damaged the largest oil refinery in Russia’s Moscow region. On the ground, forces such as those at Vizirenko’s position have increased their use of drones to devastating effect against Russian troops, further pressuring Moscow’s forces.
“We feel the difference,” Vizirenko said, reflecting a growing confidence among Ukrainian soldiers. He predicted that the forthcoming summer would present particularly severe challenges for Russian forces, describing it as “only the beginning of a hellish summer for the Russians—one they’ll remember.”
As the conflict continues, Ukrainian military officials and observers will watch closely to see if these tactical gains signal a broader strategic turning point in the long-running war.
