The U.S. Navy faces significant logistical challenges in sustaining its warships stationed in the Middle East amid ongoing regional tensions and military operations. Currently, two aircraft carriers and a dozen destroyers are deployed in the area, forming carrier strike groups engaged in enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports. These vessels receive support from an amphibious ready group that carries a Marine assault force. Together, approximately 20 naval ships operate across the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, and surrounding waters, manned by about 20,000 sailors and Marines.
These forces require substantial supplies to maintain operations. Although the carriers themselves are nuclear-powered, their embarked aircraft consume millions of gallons of aviation fuel weekly. Additionally, feeding more than 5,000 crew members onboard each carrier demands provision of roughly four meals per day, while the accompanying ships also require steady deliveries of food and fuel. On average, the Navy must supply over 420,000 meals and about eight million gallons of fuel every week to these vessels.
Historically, the Navy relied on a network of supply depots within the Middle East. However, Iran’s destruction of a critical logistics base in Bahrain on February 28—coinciding with the onset of conflict—has forced the Navy to reassess its resupply strategy. Other regional ports capable of accommodating aircraft carriers or supply vessels remain vulnerable to missile and drone attacks, effectively rendering them inaccessible. Consequently, supply ships now undertake lengthy voyages exceeding 2,200 miles to the remote island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, or even up to 3,700 miles to Singapore, passing through the heavily trafficked Strait of Malacca.
This shift has increased reliance on at-sea replenishment operations every five to six days, during which supply ships and receiving warships conduct complex maneuvers to transfer fuel, food, spare parts, and mail. These operations involve maintaining precise speed and course alignment with vessels positioned roughly 150 feet apart amid variable sea conditions. Sailors use rifle-fired lines to establish connections between ships, followed by the transfer of supplies via steel cables, while helicopters simultaneously shuttle additional cargo in nets suspended beneath their fuselages. These procedures carry inherent risks, exposing both supply and combatant ships to potential hazards.
The ongoing conflict and geographic constraints have also extended the duration of naval deployments. The Navy’s fleet includes 11 aircraft carriers, four of which are currently committed to the Middle East. Some of the remaining carriers are undergoing major repairs and are unavailable for deployment for several years. For instance, the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln spent nearly nine consecutive months at sea with limited port visits, a departure from typical practices where carriers receive monthly port calls to rest crews. The Lincoln was relieved on August 20 by the U.S.S. George Washington and later docked in Thailand for crew shore leave before resuming its journey to its home base in San Diego.
Senior Navy officials acknowledge that the current logistics approach is unsustainable over the long term and highlights the operational strain imposed by the extended deployments and the need to maintain constant readiness amid a volatile security environment.
