Lebanon’s cultural heritage suffered extensive damage during the recent conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, with losses that are both difficult to quantify and potentially take decades to repair, according to the country’s culture minister.

Speaking on Tuesday, Ghassan Salame highlighted the severe impact of the war on Lebanon’s archaeological sites, historic markets, and broader cultural legacy. While an exact estimate of the damage remains elusive, Salame emphasized that the financial cost easily surpasses millions of dollars. He added that efforts to restore the damaged heritage could span a generation.

“All Lebanese have been affected by this conflict,” Salame said, describing the destruction as the loss of an “intimate history” that is invaluable to the nation’s identity. His comments coincided with the launch of “Archiving Lebanon’s Heritage,” a digital platform designed to preserve and document the country’s tangible and intangible heritage for future generations.

The platform aims to gather a wide array of historical materials, including family photographs, home videos, correspondence, interviews, and traditional songs, submitted by Lebanese citizens both within the country and in the diaspora, as well as anyone possessing records related to Lebanon’s past. Salame noted that modern technology could help extend the lifespan of fragile media and documents, and pointed out that private collections may contain artifacts of greater significance than those held in some public institutions.

In a related statement, Sarkis Khoury, head of Lebanon’s Directorate General of Antiquities, urged the public not to lose hope despite the immense losses. “Our story does not end with these losses, or with the damage to our tangible and intangible heritage,” Khoury said. “We are the ones who create our heritage, as we have throughout history. Our memories help save what remains.”

The initiative reflects broader efforts to safeguard Lebanon’s cultural legacy amid continuing instability, offering a digital repository to ensure that remnants of the nation’s history endure despite the destruction wrought by conflict.
