A retired decorator from Woking, Surrey, has sold a long-forgotten collection of Pokémon cards for £1.56 million, far exceeding initial estimates. The cards, which had been stored in his attic for around 15 years, were initially expected to fetch up to £270,000 when taken to Ewbank’s Auctions in Guildford on Wednesday.

The man, who had been unaware of the collection’s potential value, decided to have the cards appraised after learning about a single Pokémon card being sold for more than £6,000. The auction house described the collection as the most valuable they have handled to date.

The collection comprised 42 sets, all described as being in mint condition. The most valuable item was the Legendary Collection Complete Master Set, including 110 cards, 110 Reverse Holo ‘Firework’ cards, and four Box Toppers. Among the standout pieces was a near-mint Charizard card, initially estimated to sell for up to £20,000, which ultimately achieved £100,000.

The decorator had acquired the cards during the 1990s, with one set originally purchased for £300 later selling for £75,000. This sale highlights the growing demand and significant market value for vintage Pokémon cards, which have become highly prized collector’s items in recent years.

The Pokémon franchise, originating in Japan, has seen several high-profile sales of rare cards, including an ultra-rare example auctioned by YouTuber Logan Paul for $16 million (£12 million). The recent sale in Surrey underscores the enduring popularity and increasing investment interest in these collectibles.
