Roxander, a rising talent in the world of ballet, has been promoted to soloist with Ballet Theater, effective September 1. The announcement was made onstage at the Metropolitan Opera by Susan Jaffe, the company’s artistic director, who praised Roxander’s artistry, charisma, and virtuosity. This promotion marks a significant milestone in Roxander’s rapidly advancing career, highlighted by his recent debut in the lead role of Basilio in a three-act, full-length ballet.
Roxander’s journey to this point has been marked by both challenges and key support from mentors and peers. He began with Pennsylvania Ballet II in 2019 before joining Ballet Theater’s Studio Company, thanks in part to connections facilitated by principal dancer Thomas Forster and his wife Leann Underwood. In 2022, Roxander joined Ballet Theater’s main company and was elevated to soloist two years later.
Reflecting on his promotion, Roxander described feelings of disbelief and gratitude. He noted that his physical stature and background might not fit the traditional mold of a classical ballet prince, making the opportunity to dance roles like Basilio particularly meaningful. Susan Jaffe’s support has been instrumental in his development, providing him with chances to expand his repertoire and artistic range.
Roxander emphasized the importance of camaraderie within the company, citing friendly competition with fellow dancers such as Takumi Miyake as a driving force behind their mutual growth. Raised in a creative household alongside his brother Ashton, a principal dancer with Philadelphia Ballet, Roxander’s artistic inclinations extend beyond dance to pursuits such as publishing a graphic novel. Despite an active childhood that included taekwondo, swimming, and gymnastics, he described his early years as emotionally turbulent, a dynamic he has since managed to transform through discipline and resilience.
Roxander’s deep connection to ballet was sparked in elementary school when he first recognized the art form’s magic and set his sights on a professional career. However, his path was disrupted during his brief tenure with Pennsylvania Ballet II by personal losses and professional uncertainty, including the death of a close friend and relationship struggles. These experiences prompted a significant reevaluation of his approach to life and work.
Through hardship, Roxander developed a tenacious work ethic characterized by perseverance and emotional control.
