The Welsh National Opera’s production of Puccini’s *La bohème*, currently staged at the Wales Millennium Centre, presents a stark and atmospheric interpretation of the classic opera. Directed by Floris Visser, this rendition situates the narrative in a bleak, monochrome Paris, marked by towering walls, glistening cobblestones, and pervasive shadows. The production, which debuted at Glyndebourne in 2022 during the post-Covid period, retains its austere visual style that emphasizes the opera’s darker emotional currents.

This expressionist staging notably features the character Parpignol, portrayed by Christopher Lemmings, who also embodies the figure of Death. Lemmings’s Death silently shadows Mimì, the consumptive heroine, from her entrance, ultimately leading her away in a haunting finale. One of the few bursts of color and brightness comes in Act II, when red balloons are distributed to the children’s chorus, punctuating the production’s somber mood.

While Visser’s approach highlights the stark realities underlying Puccini’s verismo style, it occasionally creates tension between the imagery, text, and music, requiring audiences to navigate these contrasts. Despite this, the production retains the core appeal of the opera’s portrayal of youthful friendship and love, captured through a convincing ensemble of young singers.

The camaraderie among the group of aspiring artists is notably well-drawn, with strong performances from company associate artists Ross Fettes as Colline and Owain Rowlands as Schaunard. The two romantic storylines at the heart of the opera are distinctly portrayed. Sofia Kirwan-Baez brings a spirited presence to Musetta, whose relationship with Marcello, played tenderly by Navasard Hakobyan, is marked by playful quarrels and affection. Meanwhile, the more tragic relationship between Mimì and Rodolfo is rendered with emotional depth by Alexia Voulgaridou and Carlos Cardoso, respectively, although Voulgaridou’s vocal performance is uneven at times.

Under the baton of conductor Corinna Niemeyer, the orchestra delivers a lively and expressive accompaniment, enhancing the dramatic contrasts on stage. The production continues to run through tomorrow before embarking on a touring schedule.
