The Denza Bao 5, a new off-road hybrid vehicle from China, is set to launch in January with a starting price of £69,500. Designed to deliver robust performance both on and off the road, the Bao 5 combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors, producing a combined output of 544 horsepower and 760 Nm of torque.
This hybrid setup enables the Bao 5 to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 112 mph. The vehicle can travel up to 519 miles on a full tank of fuel combined with a fully charged battery. In pure electric mode, it offers a range of 56 miles, running quietly without engaging the petrol engine.
Built for rugged terrain, the Bao 5 features a ladder-frame chassis and three electronically controlled differential locks, or e-diffs, that adjust torque distribution rapidly—reportedly 30 times faster than mechanical equivalents. The vehicle also boasts 16 distinct drive modes, including settings tailored for sand, snow, rock, mountainous terrain, wading through water, racing, and even tug-of-war scenarios, enhancing its adaptability to varied environments. Its hydraulic suspension allows for a 14 cm adjustment in ride height, capable of supporting significant loads even when vehicles are placed on its roof, and it can withstand drops from heights up to 33 feet without compromising drivability.
Inside, the Bao 5 offers a premium cabin experience highlighted by multiple digital displays: three screens form the central control interface, complemented by a heads-up display projecting essential information onto the windscreen. Additional features include leather seats with massage functions and integrated headrest speakers, a flight-deck-style control layout reminiscent of exotic sports cars, and unique design elements such as C-shaped dashboard air vents that double as grab handles and chain link-inspired door handles and armrests.
A notable convenience feature is a 4.5-litre temperature-controlled compartment in the center console, capable of cooling to -6°C or warming up to 50°C, suitable for storing food and beverages at desired temperatures.
The Bao 5’s battery pack serves a structural role within the vehicle and can also function as an external power source for devices like inflators and other equipment, extending its utility beyond transportation.
Analysts and reviewers draw comparisons between the Bao 5 and established off-road hybrids such as the Land Rover Defender 110 S plug-in hybrid. While the Bao 5 offers a longer pure electric range and more power, the Defender remains a benchmark for luxury off-roaders.
