A first edition copy of the Duchess of Sussex’s children’s book, *The Bench*, reportedly bearing a handwritten inscription to Princess Eugenie, was listed for sale on eBay with an asking price of £20,000. The book, which focuses on the father-son bond as seen through a mother’s perspective, was allegedly a gift to Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank following the birth of their first child, August, in 2021.
The inscription, purportedly written and signed by Meghan Markle in her distinctive handwriting, is addressed to “Eug & Jack” and references the special relationship between father and son. The note reads: “Dear Eug & Jack, Celebrating the special bond between father and son. I wrote this poem at Frogmore – I hope that Eug, you witness the same love there with your guys. All love, Meghan.” The informal use of “Eug” aligns with family nicknames reportedly used by close relatives.
The listing was hosted by London-based dealer Drive Easy’s Signed Books, which described the book as a “masterpiece of modern royal history.” The seller indicated that 10 percent of the sale price would be donated to a charity supporting disadvantaged children in Thailand. According to the eBay description, the book had been read lightly and showed only minor wear. The listing was removed after a week, suggesting the item was either sold privately or withdrawn by the seller. Nicholas Greenwood, the owner of Drive Easy’s Signed Books, declined to comment on how the book was obtained.
While new copies of *The Bench* currently retail for approximately £2, this particular first edition’s price tag sharply exceeds the original cover price of £12.99. The book, published by Random House in 2021, did not reach the UK Official Top 50 chart and sold around 3,200 copies in its first week.
Representatives for both Princess Eugenie and the Duchess of Sussex have been contacted for comment but have not responded. Meghan’s friendship with Eugenie dates back to the early days of her relationship with Prince Harry, and the pair reportedly remained close after the Sussexes relocated from the UK in 2020.
In a related development, Prince Harry recently auctioned a signed copy of his memoir *Spare* during a fundraising event at the Imperial War Museum, with proceeds benefiting charities supporting Ukraine. The move attracted attention amid efforts by Harry to mend ties with his estranged family.
