India’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated suo motu proceedings following allegations that a 16-year-old girl was gang-raped on a moving bus in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The alleged incident occurred after the girl mistakenly disembarked at Pari Chowk while travelling to visit a relative in Noida Sector 63.

According to reports, the minor had left her home on August 4 without informing anyone and was en route to her cousin’s residence. After getting off the bus amid heavy rain around 9 p.m., she realized she was still approximately 25 kilometers from her destination. While seeking transportation, a private sleeper bus reportedly stopped nearby, with the conductor assuring her that they were headed toward Sector 63 and offering to drop her off.

Police later stated that the bus was not operating a regular passenger service on that day and had purportedly been taken to a workshop in the area. Upon boarding, the girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by the bus driver, Kuldeep, 39, and conductor, Sandeep, 26. The accused reportedly left her at Kashmere Gate, from where she took an auto-rickshaw to the local police station to report the assault.

In response to the case, the NHRC issued notices to the Police Commissioners of Delhi and Gautam Budh Nagar, as well as the Superintendent of Police in Mainpuri, requesting a comprehensive report within two weeks. The commission emphasized that if the allegations are true, the incident involves serious human rights violations. The expected report should detail the progress of the investigation and include information on any compensation provided to the victim.

Authorities are currently investigating the allegations. The NHRC's involvement underscores ongoing concerns regarding the safety and protection of minors, as well as the broader challenges of ensuring justice in cases of sexual violence in India.
