Rijohn Jose, a 29-year-old footballer known for his contributions both in Kerala and the United Arab Emirates, passed away early on September 21 following a motorcycle accident in Kozhikode, Kerala. The crash occurred the previous night while he was traveling with fellow Calicut FC player Gani Ahmed Nigam. Rijohn was preparing to participate in the upcoming Super League Kerala (SLK) Season 3, set to begin days after his death.
A native of Thrissur, Rijohn had established himself as a prominent defender for Calicut FC and was widely respected in Kerala’s football community. His passing prompted an outpouring of public tributes in the state, with fans and rival teams at the SLK opener holding up banners and lights in his memory. At Calicut FC’s subsequent home game against Thiruvananthapuram Kombans, supporters displayed his jersey and photographs, and the team captain dedicated a goal to him.
Beyond his impact in Kerala, Rijohn was an integral figure in the UAE’s local football scene for the past three years. He played with several clubs, including Keynes Football Club and Volga FC, and earned recognition for his steady leadership and defensive skills. Kujohn’s involvement extended beyond the pitch, as he was also associated with the Keynes Group through its consultancy services.
Thanveer Jan, owner of Keynes Group and Keynes FC, described Rijohn as a key member of the club’s football family and expressed profound shock at his untimely passing. The club has pledged ongoing support to Rijohn’s family, particularly in helping them secure permanent housing, as they currently reside in rented accommodation. Haris Pottengatt, a founding member of Keynes FC, conveyed disappointment at missing Rijohn’s anticipated return for the Kerala Expats Football Association’s (KEFA) upcoming season, which will now be dedicated in his honor.
KEFA General Secretary Noushad K. Kunhimovim acknowledged the significant loss to both the association and the wider football community. He confirmed that KEFA representatives attended Rijohn's funeral and extended formal condolences, with plans to organize a tribute during the forthcoming local season.
Rijohn’s close friendships in the UAE highlighted his character off the field. He maintained a lifelong bond with childhood friend and fellow footballer Sajith K.S., with whom he shared a commitment to move to the UAE and compete only if accompanied by the other. This enduring partnership began through opportunities facilitated by local Kerala expatriate Uthaman K.P. Kodathur, who helped introduce them to the UAE’s football circuit.
