Aziz Abdul, the grandson of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, is set to make his Commonwealth Games debut in the heavyweight boxing competition. The bout is scheduled for Wednesday, where Abdul, also known by his nickname "Ringo," will face England’s Damar Thomas in Glasgow.

Abdul has expressed confidence ahead of the match, citing his grandfather as an inspiration. Idi Amin, who ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979 and was known for both his brutality and a fascination with Scottish culture, including wearing kilts and playing bagpipes, also held Uganda’s national light-heavyweight boxing title for nearly a decade. Abdul has embraced this legacy, stating his ambition to win gold and declaring himself a “real warrior” following in his grandfather’s footsteps. He has also promised to unveil a signature move, dubbed the "Ringo Punch," during the fight, though he declined to offer details in advance.

“I believe in myself and I mean what I say. When I say I will do it, I will do it,” Abdul said, adding that he hopes to become the “new King of Scotland,” echoing Amin’s grandiose claims during his regime. Abdul also mentioned his admiration for former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, describing Tyson as his idol and contrasting him with British heavyweights Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, whom he does not favor.

Uganda has a notable history in Commonwealth boxing, with eight gold medals, including three won at the 1970 Games in Edinburgh. However, the country has not secured a boxing gold since the 1990 Auckland Games.

On the opposing side, Damar Thomas enters the contest with a strong recent record. The English boxer narrowly missed medaling at last year’s World Championships and has since won the European Under-23 title. Thomas expressed his determination to claim gold and said he has improved significantly leading up to the event. “I’ve come on leaps and bounds. I’m going to prove it to everyone when they come and watch me in Glasgow,” he said.

The upcoming match has drawn attention not only for the sporting contest but also for Abdul’s high-profile background and bold statements. Both fighters appear motivated, setting the stage for a highly anticipated heavyweight bout in this year’s Commonwealth Games.
