A 24-year-old Mozambican woman known only as Stella rapidly gained fame in Portugal after an impromptu performance at a concert in Lisbon. During a show at the Cais do Sodré station by the singer Bluay, Stella unexpectedly took the microphone from the performer and improvised a brief song referencing nearby cars and a Pingo Doce supermarket. The 17-second clip quickly went viral on Portuguese-language social media, inspiring musicians and comedians, and was even featured on Brazilian television. Pingo Doce, one of Portugal’s largest supermarket chains, became an unintended focal point of the viral moment.
Stella told local media there was no planned marketing or publicity stunt behind her actions. She said she had been drinking with relatives near the venue but was not intoxicated. Without a prepared song, she decided on the spur of the moment to sing about the supermarket she could see from the stage.
Following her sudden rise to public attention, Stella was nicknamed “the Pingo Doce diva” and gained thousands of followers, along with several television appearances. However, her fame soon led to legal troubles. Last Friday, she was detained by Lisbon police after a confrontation with her landlady and law enforcement officers. A police source reported that Stella was suspected of insulting officers and potentially residing illegally in Portugal.
In an interview with Portuguese broadcaster CMTV, Stella said she returned home to find her belongings discarded outside, which precipitated a physical dispute with her landlady. Police were called, and Stella was taken into custody, spending the night at a police station.
Additional videos circulated online allegedly showing Stella involved in a separate altercation at a café, where chairs were thrown. Stella admitted to having consumed alcohol that day but denied being drunk, stating she was provoked and expressed willingness to apologise to the café owner for her conduct.
Expressing regret over the incident that brought her sudden fame, Stella said she wished she had never gone onstage and lamented the complications that followed. "I’m not doing well, I’m sad and thoughtful. I ask myself what I did to deserve this," she said.
Portuguese authorities have granted Stella 15 days to regularise her immigration status in the country.
