Homeowners are facing increasing financial losses as incidents of break-ins targeting sheds and other outbuildings continue to rise. According to data from insurance provider Aviva, the average insurance claim for theft from outbuildings reached £4,567 last year, representing a nine percent increase compared to 2024.

The insurer reports that more than one in four owners of sheds and similar structures have experienced either break-ins or attempted break-ins. This uptick in incidents is believed to be connected to a growing trend of storing valuable items such as power tools and lawn mowers outside the main residence.

Despite the heightened risk, Aviva's analysis reveals that just over half of sheds and outbuildings remain unsecured with basic locks, leaving an estimated 4.4 million structures vulnerable to theft. An Aviva representative cautioned that stolen tools can be used to facilitate further break-ins to the primary home, underscoring the importance of securing outdoor storage areas.

Insurance coverage for theft from sheds and outbuildings often requires evidence of forced entry, and limits may be imposed on claims. Aviva advises homeowners to carefully review their policy documents to ensure adequate protection, particularly when high-value items are stored outside the main dwelling.

The increase in both the frequency and cost of outbuilding theft highlights the need for heightened security measures and appropriate insurance coverage among homeowners.
